A bake-out clears formaldehyde and VOC off-gassing from new homes, renovations, furniture and building materials. We raise the temperature to speed up off-gassing, then ventilate the fumes out.
Lingering odours in older homes
Wood, drywall, carpet and insulation are porous. Over the years they absorb odours and chemical vapours, then release them slowly, often long after the original source is gone. Older insulation can add its own smell: many earlier fibreglass and mineral-wool batts were bonded with phenol-formaldehyde resin, which gives off a sharp, sometimes fishy odour in warm, humid conditions. A bake-out holds the whole home at a raised temperature long enough for these trapped compounds to come out of the materials, while continuous ventilation carries them outside before they can settle back in.
When heat isn't the answer. A bake-out clears odours held in materials. It won't fix a source that keeps producing them. Damp, mouldy or rodent-contaminated insulation needs to be removed, and heat will make those smells stronger while it runs. Loose, pebble-like vermiculite, common in attics before 1990, may contain asbestos; Health Canada advises leaving it undisturbed and having it tested by a qualified professional. We'll ask about your home before recommending a bake-out.
