Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature is needed to kill bed bugs?

Adult Bed bugs will die in 20 minutes when directly exposed to temperatures of 45°C (113°F). Bed bug eggs require 7 hours of exposure at the same temperature. However, if you increase the exposure temperature to 50°C, the adult bed bugs will die in 5 minutes, and eggs will no longer be viable after 30 minutes. The current recommendation for effective commercial heating services calls for a temperature of at least 55°C (130°F) for four hours, which will kill most bed bugs and eggs.

What about my fire suppression systems?

Fire suppression systems should always be taken seriously. Not taking proper precautions prior to and during a heat treatment can result in activations of sprinkler systems or alarms. Consult with your local authorities or fire department officials on how to handle your particular system when considering heat treatments.

Do I only need to heat the air to the "kill" temperatures?

No. Heat treatments require the structure and all of its contents, including wall voids, to get to lethal temperatures. Simply heating ambient air to lethal temperatures will not result in a successful treatment.

How long does a typical treatment take?

Treatment times will vary depending on the size and construction of the structure, the level of infestation, the type of contents, etc. We have found the average time to treat a typical apartment to be 8 hours (The longer the heater is on, the more effective the treatment is).

How much equipment is needed to make my structure hot enough?

The amount of equipment required to heat your structure to above 50 degrees Celsius will be contingent on a number of factors. These factors include: building materials, climate of your region, whether or not the treatment area is above/below ground level to name a few. Generally speaking, 8-12 per cubic feet BTUs (British Thermal Units) serves as a good rule of thumb.

How difficult is it to learn how to perform heat treatments?

The heat treatment process is detailed but not overwhelmingly difficult. The challenge lies in having the right amount of equipment, equipment that is simple to operate, good monitoring, and diligence. Variety of structures and situations will create new challenges. However, if you’re treating your own facilities and structures, your staff will develop and perfect the process at a much faster pace. HeatZone will help provide customized training and the proper equipment to be successful.
